Mette & Kanne

Louis Mette and George Kanne were liquor dealers in Saint Louis. There is nothing to indicate they ever were engaged in the proprietary medicine business other than their private die stamp. This was issued from 1879 until October 12, 1882. 131,400 were printed, all on watermarked paper.

A trial color proof of the Mette and Kanne stamp.

Even though Saint Gotthard Celebrated Herb Bitters was probably closer to an after-dinner drink than a cure for anything, the company had a facsimile stamp printed for use after June 30, 1883.

Mette & Kanne were operating as a distillery as of 1894.

Another billhead of the same period. No mention of a proprietary medicine.
