Lacour's Matches

Mitchell Lacour was in the match business as early as 1843. It appears that he may have left that business around 1864, and George W. Gaffit took it over. The product was still Lacour's Matches, and Gaffit kept that name, but overprinted many of the stamps with his initials and either the date he took over the firm, 1865, or April 1870 for some reason. The stamps were issued from July 24, 1867 until April of 1872. 14,050,370 were issued on old paper and 2,126,880 on silk paper. The copy shown above is on old paper. Copies without overprints are not common.
